Mark Cavendish powers to record-breaking 35th Tour de France stage win
Mark Cavendish has overtaken Eddy Merckx as the Tour de France’s stage win record-holder with 35 wins after triumphing on stage five of this year’s race

After a horrible day on Saturday with Cavendish suffering from what appeared to be heatstroke and looking as though his tour might be over before it had started, it seemed ridiculous to think he was going to manage another win.
Being denied the chance to go for a win by a crash on the first sprint stage was proof that his bad luck had carried over from last year.
He was looking good all the way to the finish today though. The last few hundred metres were perfect as he surfed from wheel to wheel the lit up to go over the line.
